Every country has its own way of connecting devices to the wall, and if you have travelled much or moved countries, you know the frustration of a plug that does not fit. There are 15 official plug types worldwide, each with different pin shapes, safety features, and quirks.

Major plug types worldwide

The US International Trade Administration (ITA) classifies plug and socket types using letters A through O, while the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) uses its own numerical scheme under IEC TR 60083 / CEE 7. Here are the types you are most likely to encounter.

Type A: two flat parallel pins Used in: USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, parts of Central and South America Voltage: 100V to 127V No earth connection. The simplest and one of the oldest plug designs still in wide use.

Type B: two flat pins plus round earth Used in: USA, Canada (for earthed circuits) Voltage: 100V to 127V Same as Type A with an added earth pin. Required for circuits that need earthing in North America.

Type C: two round pins (Europlug) Used in: Most of Europe, South America, parts of Asia Voltage: 220V to 240V The universal European plug for small appliances. No earth connection. Lightweight and compact.

Type E: two round pins with socket-mounted earth pin Used in: France, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia Voltage: 220V to 240V The French standard (CEE 7/5). Earth connection comes from a pin protruding from the socket that enters a hole in the plug. Type E and Type F are bridged in practice by the hybrid CEE 7/7 plug, which fits both.

Type F: two round pins with earth clips (Schuko) Used in: Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Indonesia, South Korea, and much of Europe Voltage: 220V to 240V The standard earthed plug across much of continental Europe. Earth connection via clips on the plug housing that contact earth springs in the socket. Type F plugs can fit French Type E sockets via the hybrid CEE 7/7 plug.

Type G: three rectangular pins Used in: Singapore, UK, Malaysia, Hong Kong, UAE, and approximately 50 countries Voltage: 230V The plug you see every day if you live in Singapore. Built-in fuse, safety shutters, insulated pin bases. Widely regarded as one of the safest designs.

Type I: two angled pins plus earth Used in: Australia, New Zealand, China, Argentina Voltage: 220V to 240V The angled flat pins are distinctive. Australia and China share this type, though Chinese sockets sometimes accept Type A and Type C as well.

Type D: three large round pins Used in: India, Nepal, some African countries Voltage: 220V to 240V An older British standard (BS 546) that predates Type G. Still common in India and the Indian subcontinent.

Singapore's Type G in detail

Singapore's Type G (BS 1363) is worth understanding beyond just the pin shape, because it has several safety features that set it apart from most other plug types.

Internal fuse: Every Type G plug contains a cartridge fuse, typically rated at 3A or 13A. This fuse protects the individual appliance and its cable. If a fault develops, the fuse blows before the cable overheats, providing protection beyond what the circuit breaker in your distribution board offers. No other widely used plug type has this feature.

Safety shutters: Type G sockets have spring-loaded shutters covering the live and neutral openings. These shutters only open when the longer earth pin is inserted first. This means a child cannot push a finger or object into the live opening without first inserting something into the earth opening, which carries no voltage.

Insulated pins: The live and neutral pins are partially sleeved in insulation near their base. Even when the plug is partially withdrawn from the socket, the exposed portion of the pin is insulated, preventing accidental contact with the conducting metal.

Mandatory earth pin: Even on double-insulated (Class II) appliances that do not need an earth connection, the Type G plug must have an earth pin (which may be plastic) to operate the socket's safety shutters.

For occasional travel: Buy a dedicated single-type adapter for your most common destination. Type C to Type G and Type A to Type G adapters are cheap, compact, and provide the most reliable fit.

For frequent multi-country travel: A quality universal adapter saves carrying multiple adapters. Look for models from SKROSS, Allocacoc, Ceptics, or Mu, which have safety certifications and sliding mechanisms that secure the connection.

What to carry: One adapter per device is the safe approach for short trips. For longer stays, one adapter with a power strip from your home country gives you multiple outlets from a single adapter.

Safety considerations for multi-type sockets

Some products sold as "universal sockets" or "multi-type sockets" accept multiple plug types in a single socket opening. While these can seem convenient, they have safety implications.

The problem with multi-type sockets is that to accommodate different pin sizes and configurations, the socket openings must be larger and the internal contacts must be more flexible. This can result in looser connections, which means higher resistance, more heat generation, and reduced safety compared to a dedicated single-type socket.

Singapore's Type G socket is designed specifically for the Type G plug, with tight tolerances that ensure firm contact. When you use an adapter, you introduce one additional connection point but maintain the Type G socket's designed contact quality.

Multi-type sockets, by contrast, compromise the contact quality for every plug type they accept. They also typically lack the safety shutters that Type G sockets include.
